Background: I have been running @dronemultimedia for about a year now and have tried 100’s of different marketing strategies to try to grow the community. I currently have 89,000 followers and get roughly 350,000 impressions (views) on a weekly basis. My goal is to share with you the most effective marketing strategies that I have found, so you don’t have to waste your time with frustrating trial and error.
1. Utilize Instagram Analytics
Instagram recently introduced Business profiles which unlocks an array of data visualization and analytic tools that are crucial for understanding your market. Once you enable this feature in the settings, you will suddenly have access to vital information about your audience’s behavior. You will be able to know what your audience is looking at, when they are looking at it, and all the statistics behind their taps. Once I started using Instagram analytics and began making adjustments based on the data, I saw a dramatic increase in followers. This is one of the few marketing strategies that I can say will help you grow with certainty.
2. Target a market
Drone Multimedia’s core target market is primarily drone enthusiasts and aerial photographers. Like the layers of an onion, this extends outward to entrepreneurs, photographers, travel enthusiasts, and even digital marketers. You need to decide what your target market is and focus all your efforts towards this group. One way to do this is to use hashtags that are commonly used in that niche. For example in my space, #dronemultimedia, #drone, #dji are used hundreds of times a day, therefore I use them in all my posts. Remember, you are allowed to use 30 hashtags per post so use ALL of them.
Another way to target this market is to start following users that use similar hashtags or have similar user names to your niche. For example in the drone space, I would definitely follow somebody with the handle @ilovedrones. I am considering writing a thorough Instagram marketing guide. Leave a comment if you are interested!
3. Post Stories
Instagram recently rolled out “stories” which are very similar to Snapchat stories. These stories provide a unique opportunity to market to your followers. Here is an example of how I utilize stories to drive traffic to my blog.
Think of posting stories as a place to share current events, recent updates, upcoming changes, or anything of the like. This is a key place where you can truly connect with your followers and show your authenticity.
4. Link to your website in the bio
Next, your bio is the only place where you can post a clickable link (besides paid promotions). For this reason, it is vitally important that you utilize this section with purpose. Have a plan. Obviously, this is a good place to put your website. But maybe there are more creative ways to utilize this space? Here’s an example – create a landing page with a lead magnet. Here is mine. Landing pages are an incredibly powerful tool to help grow an email list. This is another avenue through which you can connect with your following. (More to come on marketing techniques)
5. Create a hashtag
Lastly, create a hashtag. #DroneMultimedia has been used over 22,000 times. Why did I create it? What are the benefits? Creating a hashtag allows your followers to tag you in their comments, photos, and stories. @DroneMultimedia showcases the world’s best aerial photographers. So over time, the very best aerial photographers began to use #dronemultimedia in their posts. And now when I want to post a sweet photo, I simply search my own hashtag and pick my favorite. This completely eliminates the need for me to search around Instagram for high quality content. I created an avenue through which it is delivered directly to me. This is a simple example of the power of automation.
